You're entitled to...what?
People always want what they cannot have. They want your products--free. They want your ideas--no charge. They want what you got, don't want to think for themselves...and y'know something? I am just sick of it.
What I really resent is self-righteous know-nothings who think they are entitled to what I've created for free. Free....now what in the hell have you been smoking?
You do not go into a restaurant and think you're entitled to a free meal. You do not go into a store and demand a shirt or pair of pants for free. So when I write a book--a product--it is NOT free unless I decide to give it to you on the condition of it being a gift OR for a review.
As for my ideas, I do not mind helping out newbies. No one helped me when I started; I had to learn on my own. So if I can help, I will...but I draw the line when people demand I write their sh!t for them, give them ideas, tell me I owe them my time...the list goes on.
(By the way, this is NOT directed at anyone on this forum. This revelation came from my experiences on another forum, but I think it's necessary to share this and hopefully save other writers from a little heartache).
So listen up, ungrateful turd blossoms, with that mindset, I do not owe you anything. No one does. Lest you think I'm being arrogant, no, I am not being that way. I am simply being realistic. I do not consider myself the world's greatest writer. Like everyone, I'm trying to improve.
However, at the same time, I don't owe you my time to help you write your stuff when you should be doing it on your time and by yourself. Let those words sink in. I'll repeat them: ON YOUR TIME and BY YOURSELF.
My take on all this is as follows: If you want me to help you out, then pay me. Any writer worth their salt will tell you the same thing. Look at all the editorial companies out there advertising their services. In some cases, they charge humongous amounts of money in return for vetting your novel. They'll justify it as time spent, hours put in, creative process...and they're right. Regardless of the prices they charge, they are right. So what makes you think my time is any less valuable?
Writing is a labor of love for me. Lest you think I'm making it big time...nah. I'm struggling. Plain and simple, I'm struggling. I haven't mentioned this in a search for pity. It's the truth. So please, newbies, don't tell me that just because I have books out there I have to have money and I can spare you a few hours to help you with your project. Wealthy or not, my answer is the same--do it on your own first, and if you really want my help, then be prepared to pay for it. Just like you'd pay for a meal or a shirt or a pen.
End rant...for now.
