The reason Sherlock keeps his shirt collars unbuttoned is because he has like a seventeen inch neck, but refuses to wear XL shirts to fit his neck because his body’s more like a men’s medium so he buys the mediums and unbuttons the collar.

I’m basing this on US measurements for clothing, not UK, but I can just imagine Sherlock waltzing into the shop I used to manage and me measuring his neck and being like, “You need a fitted, extra-large dress shirt.” and him giving me the most outraged peacock face over it.

You’re so right. The purple shirt of sex would choke him if he buttoned it. That’s amazing.

Yeah, there’s no way he’s getting that collar buttoned.

If I remember correctly, the white shirt Sherlock wore in TEH to the restaurant looked a little baggy. I mean, compared to the skin tight shirts he normally wears. It made sense once he had to put on a bow tie because it HAD to button at his neck.

You can notice the difference in size around the arms. Ben’s chest was bigger in TEH because he’d just finished playing Khan, I believe.

Sherlock would not buy his shirts off the rail. They would all be bespoke so either he hasn’t gone back to his tailors for a long time or he asks for them to be tighter. The white shirt from the empty hearse fit because Mycroft was in charge ;)

Yes!!

So I wonder. Does Sherlock not buy custom shirts with an XL neck and an M body because…money? Vanity? Or does he just go with M necks/M bodies because he doesn’t button them anyway?

Asking the real questions!!

Well, we know he gets them tailored - you can always see it in the backs of his shirts! But yeah, he filmed series 2 right after he did Star Trek, and they had to replace all of his shirts because he said both his chest and neck were bigger (he really was thin in series 1!). His weight tends to the slimmer side because of his high metabolism, which is why he burned through so many calories during Hamlet - performing that often, to that degree of intensity, just made him literally burn through weight! When he bulks up, he has to work at it. I’ve noticed that his neck has never really slimmed back to series 1 size, though. His chest is naturally on the narrow side, even when he’s bulked up. He would just need things tailored regardless for his unique (beautiful) body. :)
