What do you say?

“You have great hair.”

I was puttingdown my yoga mat at the studio. I turned to the woman who had spoken to me, she was sitting on the floor, stretching. I had never met her before.

“Pardon me?” I asked.

“You have great hair.”

My hair had been up in a ponytail all morning because I had been writing – fighting, really – a troublesome section of my new book and so now that my hair was out long, ithad that weird kink in the middle where I had securedthe elastic too tight. As I was writing, I had...

Holly I love this! I have ginger hair and I'm lucky to receive so many nice compliments on it.

It does feel more awkward than being complimented on things that I choose. I didn't decide on or create or design the colour.

I remember as a child the first time I bashfully decided to say "thank you" instead of rejecting the compliment. The effect of my sudden turnaround was immediate and positive.

I learned then that it makes people feel good when you appreciatively accept a compliment or a gift or a favour from them. =)

(These days, my go-to response is something like "thank you, you're very kind". And I really liked yours - "you've made my day")
