Siskel & Ebert We Are Not: Austen Movie Critics in August

I was tickled pink when fellow Austen lover and GoodReads pal, Ahnya, and I were able to catch the last day's showing at the one local theater in the area for Love & Friendship.

And then we we're on a roll. We got together for two more, Death Comes to Pemberley and Pride, Prejudice and Zombies.

While Siskel & Ebert we are not, Ahnya and I did have an informal rating discussion after each viewing for the films, discovering we both appreciated seeing humor and wit, well-matched casting of characters, and the little original bits that made these adaptions unique.

Let's take them in viewing order:

Love & Friendship at the Theater

Overall story: 2 thumbs up
Humor and wit were sparkling
Cast: 2 thumbs up with the exception of Mrs. Johnson. Kudos to Sir James Martin for stealing the show. Kate Beckinsale sold us on her Lady Susan
Would we purchase the Disc for re-watching? Absolutely.

Death Comes to Pemberley on Netflix

Overall Plot: 2 thumbs up
Slow moments. But loved seeing evidence of life after the HEA for the P&P characters.
Cast: 2 thumbs down
with a few exceptions. Lydia and Georgiana were brilliant. Wickham was well done, too.
Would purchase for the disc for re-watching? Eh, maybe

Pride, Prejudice & Zombies on Blu-Ray

Overall Plot: 2 Thumbs Up
An adaption that pokes fun and laughs at itself. Certainly had us giggling a few times.
We add both big toes for the Hunsford proposal scene. Best adaption of that scene ever. :)
Cast: 2 cautious thumbs up
Exception was Darcy. Good actor, but not a good match for such a character. Zombies were suitably disgusting. But Parson Collins was a hoot!!!
Would We Purchase the Disc for re-watching? Yep

My thanks to Ahnya for agreeing to be my movie watching partner. Opinions expressed here are (mostly) accurate.

Book tie-ins for the movies:
Lady Susan, The Watsons, Sanditon by Jane Austen Love & Friendship In Which Jane Austen's Lady Susan Vernon Is Entirely Vindicated by Whit Stillman Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, #1) by Seth Grahame-Smith Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Have you seen these? What's your opinion on them?

J. W. Garrett Sounds like you two had a lot of fun. I think I will wait for the DVD. I keep looking at P&P&Z and just don't think I can do it. I love the look of the cover.

Oh yes, a good time was had by all even through my cringes during PPZ. I don't blame you for being wary of that one, Jeanne!
