A Mysterious Star

Kepler's space telescope recently discovered Tabby's star, 8000 trillion miles away. Moreover, this unusual star dims and brightens at such irregular intervals that cannot be explained by any known natural phenomena in the cosmos. One tantalizing prospect is that a technologically advanced alien civilization built a megastructure to harness the power of the star so to meet the energy needs of their civilization. This is not such a far-fetched idea. Not only are there more than a hundred billion galaxies in our universe but also a big galaxy can have trillions of stars. Moreover, our Milky Way galaxy has four hundred billion stars and enough dust to make billions more. Since each star has at least one planet, there are hundreds of billions of planets in the Milky Way alone. Since there are about nine billion Earthlike planets in the Milky Way alone, it’s hard to imagine the complete absence of other intelligent life in the hundred billion galaxies of the universe. As Carl Sagan said, “The universe is a pretty big place. If it's just us, seems like an awful waste of space.”
