Here’s an excerpt from Chapter 19:
“What did he say?” Pia asked curiously.
Madira blew her nose with a tissue. “Basically that it’s a ghastly idea for Anokhi to marry this chap. Actually said it could finish her—can you believe that, Pia? Anant burst out laughing when I told him…he has absolutely no faith in these chaps, thinks they’re all rogues and charlatans.”
“Finish her?” Pia echoed in alarm, as the image of that old sadhu flashed across her mind. “That’s a strong word! Did he explain what he meant? Perhaps he saw them divorcing?”
Madira shook her head in frustration. “All he said was that this marriage would trigger a terrible karma. It’s based on wrong ideals, he said, and I should stop her at all costs. Fellow hasn’t a clue how stubborn our airhead can be.” She mopped furiously at her eyes, smearing her kajal. “You’re the only one Anokhi might listen to, sweetheart,” she said, clutching at Pia’s arm. “Please do put some sense into her head. She won’t listen to me and Anant’s gone over to the dark side himself.”
