Which side are you on, girl? Which side are you on?

The brilliant panel team of Jon Jordan and Judy Bobolik have put me on a Bouchercon panel called "Leather & Lace: Cozy vs. Hardcore." Now, as many of you know, I have written more than 20 cozies in the Theda Krakow, Dulcie Schwartz, and Pru Marlowe series. But I've started going darker with the Blackie and Care series ("Ninth Life") so I could go either way. Which do you think I should argue for?

Mary Ann Both cozy and hardcore stories have their place. People like cozies for the same reasons they like romance writing. They're fun; they're predictable; they're trustworthy. Readers won't be shocked.
But hard core holds more truths. I grew up undiagnosed Asperger's. I rank high on the spectrum. I appreciated a writer who can articulate the harsher side of life. I've been there. I've walked dark dangerous streets of another kind.
You need to look to your own life experiences and your own life experiences to answer that question. I would like for you to delve more into family dysfunction like you did in your non-fiction books.

Mary - I have been in some of my newer books. You might really like "The Ninth Life," which has cats but also much tougher issues.
