Here’s an excerpt from Chapter 17:
A bidi-smoking watchman in a rumpled khaki uniform sat grumpily beside the high metal gate. Tilak shoved a ten-rupee note at him and the fellow unlocked the gate to let them in. Racing down the side road to the back of the factory, Tilak came to a jerky halt and parked the bike under a jacaranda tree. They staggered to a shady spot and threw themselves down on to the cool grass. Cradling her head in her palms, Pia gazed up at the sky and saw it fragment into a million diamonds. “Look up, Tilak!” she whispered ecstatically. “It’s Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds! L-S-D! That’s why the Beatles wrote that song!” Tilak laughed madly and threw his arms around her in a tight embrace.
As the sun rose to its zenith, they moved to the shade of an even bigger jacaranda, crushing fallen purple blossoms under their languid bodies. She rested her head on Tilak’s chest and closed her eyes; her mind felt vast and spacious, suffused with light, while shapes formed and dissolved before her in the most phenomenal hues. Much later they awakened from a half slumber. She told Tilak they should leave immediately: Dark country roads could be hell to navigate and his headlights had been eccentric of late. It took ages to get him up, and Pia realized he’d most likely popped a tab of something else before he’d picked her up. Fighting panic, she managed to get him to the bike.
