The highlight performance piece of La Academia Occidental’s 2015 arts festival was, without a doubt, Alyssa Donadeo’s self-choreographed dance “The Smoking Mountain”. Both acrobatic and pyrotechnic, the seventh-year student arranged her performance to selections from Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite blended with compositions by her older sister, Lyra Donadeo (LAO Class of 2010). Donadeo said she was inspired by what she had learned in her Muggle Science elective about plate tectonics and the formation of volcanoes around the Ring of Fire. “Our school’s history has long taught that religion and magic are not mutually exclusive,” Donadeo said in her production notes. “I think science and magic need not be strangers, either.”

Though Donadeo has been offered a position with the Terpsichore Ballet in Circle’s Corner, she is considering joining an arts collective in the Sixth Borough and developing her performance into a full-length production.
