Finally forced to serve his stint as Devin’s jailer, James returns to the place of Devin’s imprisonment, only to find his confusion grow with every day he spends with Devin.
And Devin may not be entirely out of cards.
Unbeknownst to the Goodman family, Devin’s influence extends far beyond the ten- by twelve-foot room in which he’s confined.
James comes to the realization that perhaps his great-grandfather’s plan hadn’t been for the family to save Devin after all, but instead to repay a debt owed—a soul for a soul.

Devin’s room was dark, lit only by what natural light fell through the window, and since the moon was merely a crescent slashing the sky, it was not nearly enough to illuminate the black corners where Devin preferred to lurk. James edged closer, the activated trap stinging like the heat of a sunburn, his flesh feeling too tight and slightly sore as he stood at the door. He dared to allow his toes to brush the rim of the barrier, the sensation almost a shock, jolting sharply up his legs and making his knees weak, a warning to step back before he was within its confines.
But he was more human than Devin was; all human, he sometimes had to remind himself after his years of service to the family. Not even that faint drop of the demonic that tainted the family line when Lucifer brought his great-grandfather back from the dead could take that away from him. Those who dealt with devils might be marked forevermore, James more than most—inside and out—but he would hold on to his abused humanity with both hands. The requirements necessary to do what he had done, the lengths he had to go to in order to capture Uncle Devin, may have soiled his soul, but at least his soul was still his.
Though sometimes James had his doubts about the state of his soul and how much of it might have been bartered, stolen, or gifted away in the process.

About the author
Call her ZANNE. She lives in beautiful, sunny Southern California, which is ironic since she tends to avoid the sun like it might incinerate her on the spot. While her colleagues often refer to her job as zookeeping, the technical title is actually middle school teacher. Misfit Prophets Beneath a Bankrupt Sky was her first published novel and her short story “Persephone Is Bleeding” was published in the Hungry Hearts anthology with Inkstained Succubus Press.
