Old Nick had her hooked, and she had ciggies stolen from her father in her pocket. The forbidden ritual of lighting up entranced her—watching the smoke threading blue tendrils in the air, lingering then fading, reminded her of the never-ending drama of life and death. She was aware that inevitably word would spread that she smoked, making her persona non grata in the hypercritical eyes of her community but she did not care. In truth, the smoldering looks she attracted from younger males during the community events that she was forced to attend with her father, now that Nina refused to leave home, revolted her. She’d begun to shun all those who chose to live on the surface of life like pond scum, those who refused to dig for the nuggets of gold Uncle Hari had convinced her did exist. And while she was petrified of Nick discovering that his bad seed was now smoking on the sly, she was willing to take the risk if this same vice also stopped proposals of marriage from coming her way.

Just thinking of the mothers of eligible grooms shuddering at the prospect of landing with her as a daughter-in-law evoked a feeling akin to euphoria. How gratifying to visualize those blandly pretty faces quivering with trepidation if a son should happen to even mention her name! Would they mutter prayers to protect them from the young witch whose machinations had led to the watery death of her own sister? Would gold bangles jingle in fear at the prospect of having to welcome Jezebel Pia into the fold?
