Here’s an excerpt from Chapter 14:

Uncle fortified himself with a deep breath. “Before that light shot through me, Pia, I felt too fragile to consider leaving home. Now suddenly I had the energy to drive myself to Tiruvannamalai. I stayed at Ramana Ashram and walked around the mountain, a ten mile walk called Pradakshina, which means circumambulation. It’s an old tradition, circling a sacred object to gain its blessings.

“I was a quarter of the way through one evening when the tears came. I collapsed onto a stone bench on the Girivalam Road that winds around Arunachala and wept until the storm was over. Not a soul was about, which is why I almost jumped out of my skin when I heard a voice speaking to me. ‘Focus on your Self and you will achieve moksha in this lifetime,’ it said.” Uncle’s face was radiant. “Know what?” he went on, mopping up his tears with a crumpled hanky. “I’m quite sure that voice belonged to Arunachala himself, the spirit of that sacred mountain.”

Pia pictured Uncle Hari weeping on a bench in twilight near some weird mountain, leaping up in fright at the sound of a disembodied voice uttering mystical drivel. Somehow this image did not meld with the wise man she had come to love, and who had made it his business to help every man, woman and child who flocked to him for comfort. “What did you do?” she asked, trying to hide her skepticism.
