Scene set - After a hot night with a pole dancer, Peyton is about to leave for his meeting with FUchsia Quinn when life interrupts. He is in his limo being driven to a hospital.



Peyton finished his sandwich and crunchy deli pickle, wiping his mouth and hands as Adele rolled to a stop at the hospital's main entrance. He jumped out of the car, steeled his nerves and raced to the receptionist desk. His heart pounded as he hurried down the hall to the elevators, rode to the sixth floor, and then scoured the hallway looking for the right room. Lanna stepped out, her head bent low, talking to a nurse. She wasn't crying, although worry marred her face. He heaved a sigh of relief.Lanna looked up and smiled. She wrapped her arms around his neck. "Oh my God, I'm so glad you're here. I've been a wreck all day. The nurse says something and it makes no sense. It's like my brain doesn't work."He glanced toward the room. "Can I see her?"Lanna nodded. "She's awake."Peyton crept into the room. "Hey there, Princess." He bent low and pressed a kiss on her forehead."Snickerdoodles.""Yup." He chuckled. "Snickerdoodles."Lanna crossed around to the other side of the bed and held her daughter's hand. Princess's left arm was in a cast and her head covered in a bandage. An IV line ran into her right arm."Mommy?""Yes, honey?""Will you stop crying now that Uncle Petty's here?"Lanna nodded and struggled not to cry. The look of love and pain that swept over his sister solidified a resolve in Peyton never to marry and never to have children. Family had the ability to rip your soul in half.He brushed her cheek. "I'm only here until your daddy gets here. He's on his way home. I think I saw a unicorn in the gift shop when I raced in here. Do you know anybody who might like it?'Princess yawned and nodded."I'll be right back." Peyton made eye contact with his sister; she nodded and he slipped out of the room. After chatting with the floor nurse and the doctor, Peyton's blood pressure leveled off. His niece would be fine. She'd need a little physical therapy to restore use of her arm and the swelling in her brain had lessened. No complications were foreseeable.In the hospital gift shop, he purchased a stuffed unicorn, a book of children's stories, a box of playing cards, and a balloon bouquet with pictures of teddy bears, unicorns, and kittens. When he returned to the room, he suggested Lanna let Adele drive her home so she could get a couple of hours of sleep. "It's my watch. Scat."Lanna lifted her face to kiss his cheek. "Is that Schwartz's pastrami I smell?"He nodded. "You have to love Adele.""How did she get it here from New York?""There are things I don’t ask. Now get out of here." Peyton pushed his sister toward the door, placed the gifts on the small table, settled onto the hospital chair, and waited for Princess to wake from her nap.A little after six, his sister returned. Princess and Peyton were involved in an intense game of Go Fish. Princess was winning.

Peyton is the guy we all want and Fuchsia is a girl who is not giving up on her dreams. When the two collide, everything is turned upside down and the result is hot, but also laugh out loud funny. I will definitely have to read more of Devore's books!

5 Star ***** This is the first book I have had the privilege of reading by Daryl Devote (Devore). I'm hooked!! Peyton and Fuchsia's story was full of heat and love. Their playful banter had me laughing out loud. I would definitely recommend this book to my family and friends.
