For Jacob and Daniel, two young gay men aboard a Navy ship in WWII, the risks were high. Not just the risks of injury and death from Japanese planes and submarines, but the risk of discovery, of discharge, imprisonment or worse. Only a special kind of love was worth taking that chance. But from the moment Daniel met Jacob’s eyes across a battle-scarred deck, he knew he had to try.

Being together required figuring out what it meant to be gay and in love with another man, in an era when they could be jailed or committed for admitting the desires of their hearts. On a ship at war, their relationship was measured in stolen moments and rare days of precious leave, with no guarantees there would be a tomorrow. And if they survived the war, they would need even more luck to keep their love alive through all the years to come.

This absolutely perfect story was recommended by a friend and at the time of “purchase” was a free read.  As a vociferous reader, I would pay about anything for a story of this quality.  And make no mistake, while a romance in every sense of the word, it is *all* about the story, and the wonderful, wonderful men who live it.

I doubt I can do the depth of feeling I have for these characters or their journey the justice it deserves, but quite simply, the tumultuous pilgrimage, for that is exactly what it is, of these gentle, gentle souls touches my heart in a way few stories have.  Fictionalized account notwithstanding, a reader knows they are getting a glimpse into what men faced in a time of  unspeakable personal peril, where comfort was cold and in brief snatches of valuable time. It deepens the reading experience in profound measure.

Strength and immutable love is personified in these characters and I think that is the power of this tome.  Apart from being beautifully written, the reader *experiences* this journey, not merely reads it.  I loved these strong, gentle men and how they won the golden age they deserve.  Its my sincere hope that many, many real men whose stories we will never know, found the same.
