Want to Grow? Then Teach…

You read a great book and are really influenced to implement its learnings in your life. You attend a great training and are really serious about changing your life according to what the trainer taught you. But in 99% of cases you go back to your old ways of life after the learning ends. Why does this happen? This happens because the subject matter has come to you in only one dimension – that of the “receiver of knowledge”. But when you teach the same to someone else, you also achieve the dimension of the “giver of knowledge”.

It is human psychology that when you have to teach - you learn differently. The added pressure of being a performer makes you learn more thoroughly, completely and with a outlook as to how this should be explained to others. If you don’t teach, you forget the subject and the learnings fast, as day to day trivia soon take over your life.

When you teach, on occasions you invariably have to preach and tell about some dos and don’ts of life. This puts a public pressure on you to actually practice what you preach. This improves self-discipline and self-control.

When you have taught a topic, you understand the subject matter and the associated philosophies and concepts in a deeper way. This raises your self-awareness and self-esteem.

To explain to different types of people, you develop the ability to describe the same concept in different words, styles, phrases and sentences. This improves your power of expression and self-confidence.

When you teach well, the sense of having given a good performance and the feeling of influencing an audience and having the power to mould their thinking to your way is one of the greatest feelings which truly makes life worthwhile.

As an authority on the subject, the gratitude and respect you get from listeners is an added bonus.
As a good teacher, you are revered and respected for aspects which don’t just stop at the subject matter. People look up to you also as a life coach and as a councillor for other personal issues in their life. This expands your footprint in the learners’ life.

When you know your own topic better, it increases your quest to study even more about the related aspects of the subject and its better usage in day to day life.

While or after you speak, you generally face questions from the audience related to the subject matter. This makes you think deeply as well as broadly. Even if you are unable to answer all the questions at that time, the quest to find the answers deepens your knowledge and makes you more confident.

When you make preparations to present your subject in an interesting and illustrative manner – you search for related images, videos, statistics, quotes etc. to enthral your audience. You explore how different authors and teachers have dealt with the same subject differently. This improves your research abilities, and who knows; you could be setting up the foundation of your own book or article some day!

Go on. If you want to grow in life, teach. You need not be a lecturer in a school or college to be able to teach. In fact the role of a teacher is all-pervading. Your audience can be your family, colleagues or juniors, or even a single interested person. Teaching will enrich your life in more ways than just a better grip on the subject or issue at hand.

You will become a better person with a better perspective of life, and will be enriched with a quest to learn even more.
