I propose a new test for storytelling: the unpleasantness test. Do the women in your show/movie/etc get to look unpleasant (more so than “cute disheveled”)? Do they get to act according to their own agency, possibly including being unpleasant to the male lead? Are they more than a pleasant and nice and always accommodating lamp?
Well, at least I don’t have to worry about this one…
