God is Not…

Me

One of the most provocative, incendiary and visually astute photographers around at the moment happens to be from my hometown. Gavin Millar’s portraits are dark, dramatic and incisive, while his personal portfolio offers a feast of hyper-real images that explore the themes of desire, the uncanny and the surreal in an often playful and self-knowing way. Images that bring to mind the work of Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch and Helmut Newton.

A few years ago Gavin and I became friends, and have since spent many long nights discussing the intersection where philosophy, religion, and art meet.

Last time I was home Gavin asked me to join him for a little road trip that would end up in a project binding these three together. The result is a series of photo’s around churches in Belfast woven together with Nietzsche’s parable of God’s death.
