I am a study atheist, meaning I don't believe in studies. Not one, not anymore.
You hear about studies all the time. “A recent study shows…” Insert some bullshit that isn’t true.
I have read studies that show cholesterol causes heart attacks, and I have read studies that show cholesterol doesn’t cause heart attacks, and both are fucking wrong.
Studies are essentially propaganda designed to create fear and loathing and behavior modification. I read a study once (conducted by the plastic bag industry, funnily enough) that showed those reusable fabric grocery bags were hotbeds of bacteria. YOU’RE PUTTING YOUR GROCERIES IN A SEWER. AHHH!
Driving along in the truck the other night, I was listening to the John Tesch show. He’s always got little factoids and tidbits from studies (all of which are bullshit), and he was saying that a recent study showed that people who consume hot drinks like tea or coffee have a higher incidence of cancer.
Whatever.
There are lies, damned lies, and statistics. Statistical truth isn’t really truth because it isn’t always true. Cigarettes cause cancer in a lot of people, but they don’t cause cancer in a lot of other people. How is the phrase ‘cigarettes cause cancer’ true then?
Truth to me is immutable, irrevocable, certain, and always, but not to anyone else, it seems. Modern truth is merely likely or possible.
Whenever there is something in the news presented in scientific tones, people will tend to believe it, even in 2016 when the jig is up with the media. We know it is completely biased and full of shit. Journalism is dead, if it ever even lived before. But if it sounds like science, it MUST be true.
Human beings still operate entirely on faith, without any real proof of anything, even in this so-called secular, scientific age.
