If humans, through CO2 pollution, break the oceanic biological pump and cause extreme heat retention at the sea surface, the phytoplankton will not be able to transform CO2 into oxygen. The result would be that massive quantities of CO2 from the sea would be released and the atmosphere carbon dioxide content would increase at an uncontrollable alarming rate and correspondingly oxygen would decrease.
Our breathable air is made of about twenty-one percent oxygen, seventy-eight percent nitrogen, and one percent other gases. The hypothalamus in our brain senses any tiny rise of CO2 level in our blood. Our body increases the respiration rate in front of a higher CO2 content.
In front of a one-percent breathing air CO2 mix, the body responds with hyperventilation and the need to gasp for air. Symptoms would be drowsiness, reduced hearing, dimmed sight, sweating, shortness of breath, tremor, increased heart rate and blood pressure, mild narcosis, dizziness, confusion, headache and possibly unconsciousness.
In front of a ten-percent breathing air CO2 mix, the gas is an anesthetic.
In front of a fifty-percent breathing air CO2 mix, a human would be unconscious, and death would follow by suffocation.
As a reminder, on Mars the atmosphere consists of approximately ninety-six percent carbon dioxide, one point nine percent argon, one point nine percent nitrogen, and traces of some other gases.
THE QUESTION IS:
Do we risk transforming Earth’s atmosphere to the equal of Mars if we do not immediately tackle the climate global warming problem?
