Echoes of the past - Chapter Five
Add charming to handsome and you get lethal, Teni thought to herself as she went to put the yellow roses that Fola gave her in a vase. That was exactly what Fola was, attractively lethal. She would need to muster all the cool within her to appear unaffected by him.
She cast another subtle glance at him before leaving the reception lounge. He looked like an advert for GQ magazine in his blue and white button down checked shirt, fitted navy blue blazer and cream chinos trousers. He was obviously the kind of man that made clothes look good and not the other way round. She had seen him in sports wear, in a tux and now in this smart casual ensemble. The guy looked effortlessly cool in all the outfits.
He asked about Feyi and the rest of the family as they made their way to his car. Feyi was out with Banji and her dad and Deji had gone out for a drink. He smiled when she told him that.
"Yeah, I've heard Deji and his dad are very close."
"It's sweet the way they behave." Teni laughed. "They act almost as if they are brothers." They made light conversation on their way. He was easy to talk to and she found herself talking to him about her mum and family. He was genuinely sorry to hear about her mum's death and he told her about his dad who had died when he was in his second year at the University.
She looked around as he led her into a restaurant in Ikoyi about twenty minutes later. It was a sprawling three storey building set on well manicured lawns overlooking the seafront. They were led to the table he had reserved for them. It had a good view of the sea and Teni was thrilled to see the waves crashing softly as they rolled on the beach.
"This is beautiful." She wished they could take a walk along the water front later. It would be so fairytale-like with the stars spread across the skies like a glittery curtain.
He smiled."Glad you like it." A waiter came over to them and talked them through the menu, then withdrew again discreetly leaving them to make their choices.
"Everything sounds nice but I'm not really too sure what I'd like." Teni said looking at the menu. Most of the meals sounded exotic and foreign. "I like to try new things so I want to try something other than the English cuisine." She said looking at the section of the menu where the more familiar meals were.
Fola smiled. "I've been here before and sampled some of their dishes. Should I order for both of us?"
"Please do."
"We've got all evening anyway and you can always order something else if you don't like what I chose."
She had to agree he had a made a good choice when she tasted the king prawn garnished spicy coconut rice with some sort of mixed vegetables and tomato sauce that tasted out of this world.
"Beautiful." She said taking another forkful and savouring the rich aromatic dish.
"Not too spicy?"
"My mum is Nigerian, remember? I grew up eating spicy."
He smiled. "So how have you been? Settling down some more?" To be continued........
