Having a Cold: Better Ways to Help Yourself Using Homeopathy

One of my nephews once ended up in hospital seriously ill due to accidentally overdosing on a common home treatment medicine - Paracetamol.

He had got a bad cold and just like anyone else, was trying desperately to relieve his symptoms and get better so he could get back to work.

Unfortunately although he was aware that too many paracetamol is bad for you, he'd bought two different over-the-counter products that both contained the same ingredients.

Marketed Cold Products use reassuring names and sympathetic packaging to make you believe that what you are buying will do you good.

Words like:

Cold and Flu Relief
Aids Restful Sleep

Products like Lemsip 1.(which apart from the drugs which can make you more ill, actually doesn't contain any lemon at all, only ascorbic acid, flavourings, sugar, three different types of sweetener, the chemicals citric acid anhydrous and curcumin WD which contains lactose etc etc) proudly claims:

Lemsip will relieve your sore throat, reduce your stuffy nose and in no time at all you can be back at work, well and rested.

Equally disingenuous is the marketing for Day Nurse Capsules 2.:

Nothing is stronger for Cold and Flu

What can happen though, if you're not aware, is the 'treatment' you are taking for your cold can bring other, more severe symptoms.

Known side-effects for paracetamol are:

Allergic reactionsSwellingWeaknessFatigueDifficulty breathingBloody or cloudy urine or sudden decrease in urine outputLower back painLight-headednessTremorand even more seriously:

RashesBleeding into the skinIt can also have a toxic effect on the liver.

Luckily my nephew was cared for correctly and made a complete recovery but things could have been a lot different.

Every year (these are US figures) the total of deaths caused by conventional medicine is 783,936 per year. 3.
The number of UK NHS hospital admissions due to "iatrogenic" (adverse drug reactions) is 27% 4.
140,000 UK NHS hospital admissions are due to poisonings of one sort or another. 5

People accidently (or intentionally) die everyday from a paracetamol overdose. This terribly sad statistic could be greatly reduced with better knowledge.

The Drugs Don't Work
And the truth is, a person with a cold, doesn't need drugs to get better.

Since the late 1700s people have been treated successfully with far less chemically poisonous substances.

Dr Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of Homeopathy, an alternative and complementary system of medicine, developed his system of medicine for one reason only.

He was dismayed and upset by popular medical treatments of his day that included blood letting, leaching and seriously poisonous products and energy reducing treatments such as sweatings.

He discovered, accidentally, that diluting and energising a toxin brought out its healing qualities without producing 'side-effects'.

The nano amounts of crude substances in a homeopathic remedy ensure the healing properties are just enough to remove symptoms, gently and effectively.

Homeopathic Remedies for the Common Cold

Homeopathic remedies for the Common Cold include

Aconitum Napellus
Aconite
A highly poisonous but beautiful purple flower. The homeopathic remedy is prepared from the whole fresh plant as it comes into flower.

By trialling it on healthy, human volunteers, or 'provers' 6. it was found useful for colds with a very runny nose, with much sneezing, and/or throbbing nostrils. It's also helpful for colds that start because you've been outside in cold, dry weather, or have sat in a draughty, cold place for any length of time.

This is what Hahnemann said about the remedy when he discovered its healing powers:

"In acute inflammatory fevers, where it has been imagined that the patient can alone be relieved by copious and repeated bleedings, Homoeopathy asserts its great superiority, in being, by the use of this medicine, able to overcome fevers and restore health in a shorter period of time than under the allopathic treatment, without being obliged to shed a single drop of blood, --that vital fluid which has been so often dangerously lavished under the old system." 7.

Atropa BelladonnaBelladonna
This remedy comes from the poisonous deadly nightshade. The homeopathic remedy is made from the whole fresh plant, which is highly poisonous in its raw form and contains the alkaloids atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine. The symptoms of deadly nightshade poisoning are dizziness, confusion, incoherent or violent behaviour, a dry mouth and throat, flushed face, wide staring eyes and difficulty speaking or swallowing.

When homeopathically prepared it relieves those same (obviously less intense) symptoms, especially colds where the throat feels constricted with a desire to swallow but the sensation as if a lump were there. There can be high fever but no thirst. The runny nose (coryza) has mucus mixed with blood.
This is the cold you can't miss and starts energetically, and suddenly.

Sea Salt

Natrum Muriaticum
Or Nat Mur is another very useful cold remedy, one of many that homeopaths have proved and is made from simple sea salt, sodium chloride.

This is the type of cold that has a violent, runny nose with lots of clear snot - that lasts from 1-3 days then changes into stoppage of the nose making breathing difficult. The discharge is thin and watery like the white of a raw egg. It also helps colds that start with lots of sneezing.

Your cold can also be relieved by resting, drinking plenty of hot water with a slice of lemon and some honey.
