June 27 1358 The maritime Republic of Dubrovnik (modern Croatia) was founded. 1462 King Louis XII of France was born. Louis was very popular with the people of France and became known as "the Father of the People" for his efforts to protect his subjects from oppression and his ability to finance his wars without heavy taxation. Though he kept France free of civil war, he became involved in detrimental hostilities with Italy.
