among the fields of gold

My favorite songs this week:

Fields of Gold (Sting) *

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in fields of gold

--

Get Together (The Youngbloods)

We are but a moment’s sunlight
Fading in the grass

--

Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)

Did they get you to trade
your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
a walk on part in the war
for a lead role in a cage?

--

re: Fields of Gold:

Here is another great lyric, but it’s always puzzled me. Shouldn’t it be “graze awhile”? What else would you do in a field of barley?

So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold

(Yes, I'm joking. This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.)
