A: The name Gandalf appears in one of Tolkien's favorite books, the Elder Edda, a collection of Icelandic myths and legends. Gandalf means "sorcerer elf," or wizard. (In early drafts of THE HOBBIT, Gandalf was called "Bladorthin," a word that sounds like something medicinal. It just goes to show the value of revising!)
