Which Book Reviewers Do You Trust?

Everybody has their favorite reviewers they trust enough to try out reading--or even buying--a new book that gets a thumbs up review. For the older mysteries and crime fiction titles, I rely on Anthony Boucher's (1911-68) reviews. My reading tastes in the classic noir and hardboiled books run similar to his. For Southern literary fiction selections, I used to follow Jonathan Yardley's reviews back when he reviewed fiction. James Reasoner, Bill Crider, and Ed Gorman review books on their respective blogs I enjoy reading. Review outlets like Bookgasm and Elizabeth White's Musings of the All Purpose Monkey are helpful, as well. I like to hang out on twitter to see when reviews of books I might like to read get posted. I also like to leave a comment or thank you for the reviewer. Goodreads is a robust forum where readers share comments and reviews. That's what I do for finding my reviews.

Happy reading to you and yours!

Laura Lee I trust a few of my friends and look at what they have in their Goodreads lists. I have so many books in my too read list, though, that I sort of want to say: "Stop! Please everyone just stop telling me about books!"

Yes! My TBR list must have 400 books. I'll never make a dent in it.

Randy You mention several I rely on: Reasoner, Crider, and Gorman. There are others to numerous to mention I've learned to trust. If you count both my TBR piles, both paper and ebook, it runs over four hundred and you're correct in not making a dent. As much as I read, it continually creeps up.(sigh) The plight of the reader.

I have friends who don't get it and I quit trying to explain long ago.

Michele bookloverforever actually, I don't usually read reviews. I'll try any author once in any of the genres I enjoy: paranormal romance, romantic suspense, romance, historical fiction,, mysteries, thrillers...if I find an author I really enjoy I read everything I can find by that author and keep track of when the next book is due out so I can request it. I tried the Harry Potter books because Rowling had 3 books on the NY TIMES best sellers list at the same time...the older Harry got the better I liked the books. I make up my own mind.
