Can you start a sentence with
and or
but? Sure you can.
And and
but are part of a group of words called conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).
For a long time it wasn't okay to start a sentence with
and or
but. If you grew up, like I did, in the 80s and 90s, no way, Jose, were you going to start a sentence with a conjunction. But these days it is considered a-okay and even grammatically correct.
Even so, I found myself correcting this on a dissertation I was editing. I think for formal documents like a dissertation I would still recommend avoiding starting a sentence with a conjunction. There are still old-school editors out there who were taught the old-school way and sure won't take kindly to
but or
and at the start of the sentence.
Like me.
