The Tricky Nuances of Tipping in 2011

Okay, so it's 2011, and the economy continues to slog through its tarpit. Money grows tighter. The fear of money growing tighter prevails. How does this finanical reality change the rules of tipping or gratuities?

Newspaper carrier. The carrier delivers my newspaper, heaving it from his auto, at 5:30 a.m. I hear the plop since I've been up since 4:00 a.m. At Christmas, he requests a tip.

Restaurants. Do you tip the server, what is it now, 15%? Here I'd go thumbs up. Food service is fast, hard work. I know this from working for a chain that didn't allow tipping.

Hotel maids. Again, hard workers. Do you base your tip on the level of service?

Barber. My hair is short (no shampoo), so I tip the barber two bucks.

Here's an intriguing aside. Do ladies or men leave bigger tips in 2011?
