(sshh!) little froggies!: thoughts on the new harley design
NOTE: I moved this to its own post because I didn't want it to attached to an otherwise awesome drawing, I don't want my post to get reblogged on the coat tails of that.
Thoughts on the subject since I missed that boat:
What bugs me about the new Harley design, and many others, is the fact that all these artists and writers FLIRT with ideas of sexiness and sexuality without any commitment to it. They draw ladies in sexual manners and scantily clad by default, regardless of personality or job requirements as a hero/villain.
In the end that sexiness is without any rhyme or reason and it's meaningless, soulless, and how can soulless sex really be sex anyone is interested in?
This also creates a problem when you want to introduce a character incorporating a lot of sexual overtones in their personality and work, only to blend in because that's the default anyway. How can you have a vixen versus a cute "everyday" kinda girl when all of your "everyday" girls are cookie-cutter vixens.
Either go all the way, and have the character's overt sexual theme in costume and demeaner ACTUALLY MEAN SOMETHING (Think about someone like Poison Ivy, who does use that to her advantage — and HEY, look at the OP, why couldn't you rob a bank with sex!!) or drop it all together and dress these ladies (and dudes) appropriately for their personalities and skills.
We get it, ladies have boobies. It's not a fact I'm going to forget if I can't see them — I'd like to think most of us have a grasp on object permanence
It can be hard to put into words why even a porn comic site owner like me has problems with DC doing this stuff, but Amanda puts all very nicely.
