Talking to Dex!

One of my sweet fans won a contest on my facebook page for a phone call with Colin Egglesfield (DEX!) I received many cute photos, but hers was definitely the most creative and imaginative. After speaking with Colin at length, she wrote a great article for examiner.com.

Here is her Q&A with Colin:

I believe you were in Telluride last year. Was that your 1st time in CO? What did you enjoy the most? What do you plan to do/see next time you're in CO?

I had a great time. It was absolutely beautiful out there. I was mainly there for the film festival but I went for a hike as well. I'd love to go mountain biking next time.

What is one thing that Emily's fans would be surprised to know about her?

Emily's a pretty open book. When you meet her, she's always smiling; she always has this really beautiful smile on her face all the time. She's always joking around, she always knows the latest Hollywood gossip; she loves gossip. She's a fun person to be around. She's always cracking jokes and telling stories and she loves to dance. The night of the premier, she danced with quite a few different people, including my brother.

In real life, would Darcy or Rachel (characters from Something Borrowed) be your type?

I think this is why I'm not married yet, because I like a combination of both. I'm more attracted to Rachel (her personality) but I like a girl who can, at a party, not be too shy, or be too afraid to do karaoke, or someone who's not going to be shy if I ask them to dance. I like someone who likes to do stuff, and who's adventurous, but just doesn't have to be the life of the party like Darcy.

Did you keep anything from the Something Borrowed set?

Some of the clothes, a suit and some shirts. I wanted to keep my TAG Hauer watch, but it didn't work out.

Tell us about the casting process for Dex.

I first auditioned with the casting directors, then with the director. Next there was a chemistry read with Ginnifer Goodwin (it was down to about 7 of us at this point), which was taped and played for producers Molly Smith and Hilary Swank. I guess I caught Hilary's eye and both Molly and Hilary liked my audition and there was another guy that the studio really liked, so it was between the two of us. So they had us come down again, just the two of us, and that was just nerve wracking because by now, it had been about a month. When you're so close to something you can feel it, and you want it so bad at that point. It's almost like falling in love with a girl. It's like dating someone for a month and then they say, "Yes, I want to get married" or "No, I don't like you anymore and I never want to see you again". It can be very nerve wracking in those final auditions, but fortunately I got it. I found out a week later.

Emily is probably the go-to beach read for her fans. What would we catch Colin reading?

I like to read biographies. I'm reading Paul Newman's biography now. I've read Montgomery Clift's. I'm also reading Confessions of an Economic Hitman. I like to read mostly non-fiction.

Is there a special lady in your life now? If not, who tries to set you up the most? Mom? Sister Kerry?

No special lady. I dated a girl for the past year but she recently moved to NYC. She's in wardrobe and costuming and styling and she wanted to go to NYC to potentially work with the high fashion magazines there. It's one of those things where if it's meant to be, if it's true love, it'll still be there no matter how far we are from each other and how long it takes.

They know better, my family. It's not the easiest situation. There's a lot of pressure and awkwardness, so I don't like being set up. I just don't do it. If someone wants me to meet their friend, I'll say, "There's a party Friday night, why don't we meet there", but I never like to do the blind date thing.

What is your favorite movie?

I love Gladiator, Jerry Maguire, Dead Poets Society, True Romance (Amy note: my fave!) and Star Wars.

Whom do you hope to work with someday (actor/director)?

For Directors, I'd love to work with David Fincher, Michael Mann, Christopher Nolan, and Steven Spielberg. For actors, I'd love to work with Daniel Day Lewis, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, and Scarlet Johansson.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Chocolate. Dark chocolate. Chocolate chip cookies. My favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate chip cookie dough.

What was the worst date you've ever been on?

It was a blind setup. I was traveling and I met this girl and I wanted to ask her out to dinner. So I called her hotel and this other girl answered the phone and told me that girl had left and would be out of town for a few weeks. So we started talking and I asked her if she wanted to get something to eat. We met at a restaurant and she spent the whole time talking about how she was in love with this guy who was married. She flew across the country to surprise him and his wife answered the door, so she was heartbroken. I pretty much felt like I was Dr. Phil the whole evening and couldn't wait to get out of there.

If you could give one piece of dating advice to women, what would it be?

Never sleep with a guy on the first date. Make him work for it a little bit. Don't be too overeager. A guy needs to feel like he's earned something or that he has to work for it, so he appreciates it even more. But don't act like you don't care either.

Also, a guy likes to see how a woman is if she's potentially going to be the mother of his children, so it's little things like if we go to a restaurant, be nice to the waiter or if you see that a girl is being considerate, saying thank you, being appreciative, because for a guy to see that a girl is considerate and appreciative, that's definitely big points in a guy's book. That being said, you don't want to be too overeager, too eager to please. And don't talk too much. A lot of girls feel like they have to keep asking questions and talk to keep the conversation going. It's ok for some silence and to let the guy take some initiative to talk about something.
