The Map: Use the Magic of a Talisman to Ward Off Fear, Worry, and More!
Today I want to tell you about one of the most extraordinary tools to help you tap into your profound inner-wisdom so you can continue to move forward on your path. It's a talisman!
A talisman is really anything—an object, memory, image, etc—that represents something to you. It could embody a belief, lesson, goal, pattern you want to discard, attitude, and so on. Last spring, I wrote a blog on using a talisman to represent a belief or thought that you want to release. As I teach you in my new book, The Map: Finding the Magic and Meaning in the Story of Your Life, you can also use a talisman to embody the wisdom and courage you've gleaned on your journey. When you do this, you can then easily reconnect with that talismanic magic no matter what's happening in your life.
The word talisman comes from an Arabic term meaning "initiation into mysteries." We are all called to initiation at certain points in our lives, such as when we face loss or hit rock bottom and must start over. While all might seem dark, we must let go of our fears and embrace the Mystery. When we do this, we tap into the profound courage within us so we can remain present in the experience and shine the light on the treasures hidden within the darkness.
Those treasures are the lessons we learn within even saddest and toughest experiences. With each new lesson, we reveal a new part of our self, one which can face the darkness knowing that with the support of Spirit, we will survive this as well. As you interact with your Map and traverse your inner psychological landscapes, you'll find many treasures that can be forged into magical talismans of crystallized knowledge.
As I teach you in The Map and have talked about in previous blogs, it's the environment of your mind that creates your external reality. Over the years, I've perfected the process of using the power of metaphors and imagination to delve into the deepest parts of your subconscious—your inner landscapes. These internal landscapes, which are made of your thoughts, feelings and beliefs, are one of the most important keys for shifting your outer world.
Once you integrate an experience you have a talisman. It's an amulet to ward off fear; no matter what's happening in your life, it reminds you that you already have the wisdom you need to shift your inner and outer experiences. You don't have to repeat the same things. When you're feeling alone and depressed in the Barren Desert, your talisman brings you the clarity you need to be resourceful and have faith. If you're wandering around the Corridor of Uncertainty, it reminds you to move forward. And, when you're trapped in the Ghostlands, your talisman empowers you to feel the difficult emotions you've been avoiding. In any distressing metaphorical landscape, your talisman can remind you that you already have all the power you need to move forward.
Exercise: Create Your Own Talisman
Think of an initiation you've experienced in your life. Perhaps the personal growth work you undertook after a break up, a scary transition that revealed self-confidence you didn't know you had, or even a loss that resulted in a deeper connection to Spirit and your intuition. What past triumph or triumphs stick out for you? And what were the crystallized lessons you uncovered from those experiences? Take some time to journal your thoughts and emotions.
Then, close your eyes and envision the type of object you could use to symbolize these triumphs and the courage they generate within you.
For example, you might use a feather to represent help from the angels and Divine support. Or, you might get a stone or bracelet with words engraved on it. My workshop participants have also used crystals to represent clarity, a felt heart to represent love and courage, and a colored ribbon to symbolize eternal connection with a loved one.
You can be as inventive as your like, just let your intuition guide you since this will be YOUR talisman.
