Wow...
I did a google search today just out of curiosity. I typed (without quotation marks) "Tempus Tyra." I browsed through the results realizing it was really fun just seeing what came up. Close to the bottom of the first page I saw this:
Tempus by Tyra Lynn - Share Term PapersDoes anybody have this book? I think it came out on the 17th of May and it looks really good. Could someone please upload it?
When I first saw it, I was flattered. Then I realized what it meant - it meant they wanted to steal my book.
Smashwords (who encourages uploading without DRM) has a title called " You are More Likely to Get Shot than Have Your Book Stolen."
Bookclubs on Barnes and Noble says "A reality check for people who are afraid of getting their book stolen or who want DRM: You are More Likely to Die in a Car Crash Than Have Your Book Stolen."
Sustainable Business Forum says ebook theft being common is a myth, that "You have exactly the same chance of getting your e-book stolen as getting your paper book stolen. The risk is identical."
WOW. I just died in a car-crash and had someone shoot me (guess they didn't realize I was already dead from the crash) before stealing a book from my front seat!
Did the person who asked for the upload steal my book? No. Why not? Because it has DRM. So, to smashwords, B-n-N, and the rest - the real myth is that you can upload your book sans DRM and rely on the honor system. Most people are honest, but if given the choice of free or paying a price, nature will push them toward free every time - not because they are bad, but because they are human.
