The Most Amazing Thing

There is a commercial running lately that asks, "What is the most amazing thing you've ever seen?" When I heard this ad I pondered the question posed. I'm still pondering it. What one thing filled me with more wonder, more awe, than anything else I've ever seen? I'm not talking about movies or television here. I'm talking about something I was in direct contact with. Something I experienced. Something that made me say, "Is this real? I can't believe I'm seeing this!"

The sad truth is - and I hate to admit it - I've become somewhat cynical. The world saps the awe right out of your limbs if you aren't mindful. With the internet, the daily news cycles, the "seen it" cultural apathy in the air, I have become blah. Somehow unimpressed by things. I aim to put an end to that, though, and have started a moment-by-moment campaign of personal reclaiming. So then, what things can I look back on and remember thinking, "Wow!"

There was the natural, of course. I saw a young deer and a huge white dog in the field next to the house once. Then I saw them again. The dog was very protective of the deer and it was lovely.

I saw that same young deer approach my house, climb the porch, and look at me eye to eye. Gorgeous. You've never seen such innocence and curiosity. That was pretty damn amazing.

I once saw a massive golden bid sitting on the ground in the backyard. It looked like some kind of falcon. Ands when I say golden, I mean GOLDEN.

I saw the remnants of Hurricane Ike tear through the Ohio River Valley. Fourteen of the trees around the house went crashing down in the middle of the day as we watched.

When I received the first copy of my first published book, THE REST IS ILLUSION, and held it in my hands, that was an exceptional moment.

When I saw my book SIMPLE MEN atop the M/M Amazon Bestsellers list, that was pretty cool.

The Colosseum in Rome overwhelmed me.

The first time I saw another guy's beautiful bare ass was a nice moment (even if it was only a mooning).

And I got to play around with an enormous penis on a guy I never expected to have one so large. Definitely something amazing to see.

But the ultimate answer to the question, "What is the most amazing thing you've ever seen?" I don't know. Do you?
