Let's talk about rape for a moment, shall we?

Or rather, I'm going to let my friend [info] ginmar talk about it first, about:

the bad art of screeching "false accusation" in rape cases

victim blaming and slut bashing

They're kinda long, but they're worth reading, because I swear, the treatment of rape victims in the media and by those who know them, and the number of rapes, are growing--probably because of reportage but also because, as R.A.I.N.N.'s statistics show, 60% of women don't report their rapes.

And let me just say for the record,

being in the wrong place at the wrong time qualifies no one for rape

dressing in a manner that some asshole defines as "slutty" or "provocative" or "ho wear" qualifies no one for rape

being present at a fraternity or an office party qualifies no one for rape

being a sex worker qualifies no one for rape

having a rocky marital history qualifies no one for rape

being drunk or drugged or sick or in police custody qualifies no one for rape

not responding in a "suitably aggressive" (in anyone's judgment) manner qualifies no one for rape

being married or a man's significant other does not qualify his partner for rape

being FEMALE or GLBT qualifies no one for rape (babies, children, and teens are also off limits)

The only thing that creates a rape?
IS THE PRESENCE OF A RAPIST

Bridgett Johnson-Pride Well said!

message 2: by Sian (new)

Sian Thank you, interesting reading and stuff that needs to be repeated over and over until it sinks in to the mainstream mind.

Killian To echo Bridgett, well said! Why people are so ready to make excuses on behalf of rapists is beyond me.

Irene Palfy Thank you so very, very much, Ms Pierce!

Selena Pigoni A real big cause of rape and lack of reporting is the double standard. For women, no means yes and a brief glance means, "take me I'm yours." >_<

Ubalstecha Bless you, bless you, bless you.

Kate Gritz That is a message that all women and men should understand but they don't unfortunately. I personally found this message very wonderful and i think lots of people should read this post!

Bridgett Beardsley I think in all societies, people will look for a scapegoat. It is human nature to look at something and assess it. For instance, if I were to look at a rickety chair, I would discern if it were stable enough to sit on. It is a natural progression to view people the same way. When you look at a well dressed or well spoken man and a woman who is not, it is a part of our make up to look and make a judgement. Sadly, I don't know that there will ever be a time when people fully understand. There is so much bigotry, ignorance, and just plain hate in the world that this will be an issue for a long time to come. I am thankful for people like you, Tamora, who bring light to this issue. In a day and age where the most important article in a magazine or newspaper is who is getting divorced or who wore a skirt so short she showed all of her bits and pieces, this is, albeit, frustrating and sad, but is also refreshing. Thanks.
