Writing and Technology

"Thinking has become distributed." -Chris Dede

Just saw a fascinating video of Chris Dede talking about intellectual partnerships between a person and a tool, and between people through information technology (asynchronous interactions).

He brought up questions of how to prepare students to compete in a truly global environment as information technology provides the opportunity to do work from anywhere in the world. If you're interested in learning technologies, this article might be interesting.

Here's what he had to say about how technologies have changed the writing process:

"Word processing has made a tremendous shift in the way that I write. I'm old enough, unfortunately, that I did my doctoral thesis on the typewriter. How I thought as I wrote was I would think very carefully for about 2 minutes about each sentence because I knew how difficult it would be to change it afterwards with white out and all the correcting tape and so on. Now, when I'm writing, I think for about 10 seconds. I Put something down with my word processor, think for another 10 seconds, modify it, think for another 10 seconds, modify it. It's writing as revision, I find it much more powerful."
