Constance entered her shrine naked and adorned with garlands
made from the best picked flowers she could find. The flowers were mostly
dandelions, but they were the greenest and liveliest things that grew in her
dismal garden. Her god had been waiting impatiently for his offering. She
brought him many sweats and stolen treats in her acts of mischief against ‘That
Woman.’ But Constance liked to believe it was
her body and her wits that he wanted most.

She opened Ishtar’s cage to let him explore. They had
grown comfortable enough together that he no longer nipped at her like he first
did. She could hold him now, close to her bosom. She loved the feel of her
god’s warmth so close to her. He would play and fiddle around in her arms as
she gave him his treats.

He
then came to do a surprising thing, and chose to suckle on a nipple like a
hungry child. Even though Contance feared his sharp teeth, Ishtar was very
careful not to harm her. For a brief moment Constance
began to wonder, in hopeful dreaming, if Ishtar was indeed the god that would
save her after all.
