Which Nation I Pick for My Mysteries

If I'd my pick of settings for a mystery novel, I'd read one set in Mexico. The fact I haven't read many novels cast in Mexico is the reason. I also traveled to Mexico in the early 1970s.

It was so exotic that I came home with a year-long bout of viral encephalitis. That's the sleeping sickness with splitting headaches and lethargy. I stayed out of my first year in college.

You'd think I'd swear off the place for keeps. Wrong. I may never decide to return there in person, but I can go back in print. That's why I'd like for some of my future mystery reads to take place south of the border.

One of Ed Lacy's detective titles is set in Mexico, and I think a Bart Spicer paperback I read has a Mexican locale. Lew Archer in Ross Macdonald's PI novels travels to Mexico. Of course, these authors have been dead for decades, so the place no doubt has changed a bit since they wrote about it.

Any recommendations for newer Mexican mysteries? Have you read one recently? Thanks for your help.
