Interview with Author Michelle Polaris

I'm thrilled to be hosting fellow 1-800-DOM-help Author Michelle Polaris today! She sat down and answered a few questions and will tell us all about her new book, Fettered Love!



Welcome, Michelle!

~Let's start with the important stuff: Do you prefer to read Dom/sub, Domme/sub or any variation thereof? Are most of your BDSM stories MF, MM, MFM, etc.?

I've read a variety, although my favorites are of the Domme/sub variety. Go figure. I've written MMF and MM stories myself, with any female characters always dominant. Although I admit I'm thinking of going traditional, with a MF story percolating in my head. Not too traditional. The heroine will still be a Mistress and the hero a sub, but strangely this constitutes a change of pace for me.

~What is the hardest part of writing BDSM?

Getting the emotional intensity right in the BDSM scenes. I write scenes where the play is used to break down emotional barriers and allow healing of characters' dark places. In life we all play out our issues, most of us in frustratingly repetitive and stuck behaviors. But the symbolism available in BDSM with its use of pain and the giving and receiving of power is an opportunity for emotional catharsis. Writing about this is a challenge.

~What's the very first thing you wrote, and is it hiding under the bed? (Or in this case, is it handcuffed to your bed?)

LOL. The very first thing I wrote was a novella in middle school. I only wish I had it hiding under my bed because I would love to drag it out. Unfortunately, it is lost in time. The story was a tragic fantasy romance with very sexualized elements. I believe it featured He-Man and his female warrior woman counterpart. They fell in love and only found out that they were half-siblings parted at birth at the end. I liked edgy topics even as a youngster. (grin)

~What book are you reading now?

I just finished Karen Marie Moning's Shadowfever. I loved it and thought she did a wonderful job finishing up a strong series. I'm also reading Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy's The New Topping Book.

~Which of your characters would you want most/least to share a scene with, and why?

I most want to share a scene with Roman, my male switch character in Bound Odyssey. I'm in love with him. He's a witty, smart assed, sensitive, loving, sharp as nails man from Appalachia who is comfortable with who he is. And he looks like Matthew McConaughey.

~Readers love to connect with their favorite authors. Will you be attending any conferences in 2011?

Yes, the New England RWA Let Your Imagination Take Flight conference in Salem, Massachusetts in April of 2011. And the Ellora's Cave RomantiCon convention in Akron, Ohio at the end of September of 2011.

~Tell us about your newest release:

I've just released a novella on January 28th entitled Fettered Love which is part of the new 1-800-DOM-help series at Ellora's Cave. This is a M/M/F contemporary love story featuring three friends who experienced heartbreak at the end of college, during the early years of their discovery of BDSM. The story takes place over a decade later when Sarah, the Domme who had broken Kirk and Evan's hearts, suddenly appears back in their lives. She's keeping a secret from the men, but most importantly longs to rebuild trust with them and be part of their lives any way she can. Of course the mechanism that brings them together is the mysteriously appearing 1-800-DOM-help business card, and the hotline that directs all three of my protagonists to the club Unfettered.

~How about some cover-artist love? Who designed your cover?

Syneca and I am a very thankful and lucky woman to have benefited from her talent. I love the heroine's latex dress, although I usually prefer leather. And who can be upset about the man kneeling at her feet? Angelo was a delicious choice of cover model for the shot.

~Is there anything you want to add but never get asked?

How about, where would I most like to visit in the world for story inspiration? My current vote is Paris. The city of love and one of the kinkiest places I can imagine. Anyone have a free ticket and a place I can crash?
