Oh, Woe is My Garden

I did a vegetable garden last year, and oh was it full of awesome. We had an early warm, wet spring, and rich soil, and we had a yield that was nothing short of awesome.

Right now my garden looks like this:

Spring has been dry as old bones. And cold. Biker Dude has been traveling, and to say we're not yet prepared to plant is the understatement of the year. He built a second garden area last fall as you can see, so we ("we" meaning him, of course) need to bring in a truck load of top soil to fill in the new garden area). We have to dig out the dead junk from last year.

But the strawberries are already coming up. And onions. And my herbs. I'll have to redistribute some of those. And I still haven't decided yet what I'm going to plant this year. Tomatoes, of course. And potatoes. Probably green peppers. Not sure what else yet. Guess I need a plan, and in a hurry.

We have a ton of work ahead of us and planting time is like…now. Yikes.

Do you plant a vegetable garden? If so, is your planting time upon you, and what are you putting in this year?

Tonya Gentry I would love to have a garden. I live in the country in SC in a tiny town called Starr. We have a small farm (10 acres) & plenty of room for a garden. The reason I can't have one is because I have a neighbor that rescues wounded & baby deer. He raises them like pets & they are so friendly that they will come up on my deck & eat out of my hand. Unfortunately, they also eat everything else includng my plants, flowers & of course, everything in my garden. I also have foxes & raccoons & those nasty possums that come out in the evenings & eat anything the deer happened to miss. It's probably for the best since I don't like to do yardwork but I would love to be able to go outside, get a tomato that I grew & make me a tomato sandwich. I do love feeding the deer in the evenings though. There's something so peaceful about them. And just a little tip about gardens~~If you do have little critters getting in your garden, people around here say that if you put human hair around your garden, the critters won't bother it. They'll smell it & go away because they're scared of people. When people go get their hair cut, they sweep it up & bring it home & sprinkle it around their garden. They swear it works but I've never tried it. Good luck with your garden!

Wminbc Hi Jaci...lovin' on the first Play by Play book!!!

I had a garden my whole life (grandparents were Scottish so they grew everything). Then my son and I had a 20X20 patch that we grew corn, lettuce, herbs, everything...Unfortunately it fed the local deers more than us! This year we are planning a new garden on some acreage that friends own. We are going to plant up to 25X25 and deer enclose it! We want to have all the veggies, lettuces and even try watermelon. A dear friend works at a nursery and is starting all the plants for me (to save money since they will be free) and then we are planning to grow an extra row of potatoes, carrots, beans, and peas for the food bank. Plus, I want to get a bunch of sweet 100's to plant up into buckets...nibbles from the deck while reading! Have a great day, Karia

Jaci Burton Tonya - never heard about the human hair trick. Will have to try that! And deer are wonderful, and also can be a nuisance. We have a fenced yard so no problem with them. Just the birds who dive bomb the tomatoes lol.

Karia - Thank you for reading The Perfect Play! Love your garden ideas! Hope you have a great yield this year.

Tamara - We planted zucchini this weekend, among other things. I need to do a new blog post with an update. :-)
