Researching the Myth

Today I have been exploring my favourite stomping ground, the Peak District. It was done by car as I was with my dad and he 'doesn't do walking.' I wanted to go and do some research for my mermaid story, which will be included in the mythology anthology I'm putting together.

Luckily, the pond or mere as they're also called, is within easy reach of the road, so I didn't have to drag my dad too far. The area itself is just a little way off the A53 main Leek to Buxton road, if you're familiar with the area. It's moorland, so everything is very brown and beige but somehow, still completely stunning. There are brilliant views across to the west and Tittesworth Reservoir, Hen Cloud and The Roaches, all of which you can see in this video:

The pond itself is fascinating. The water is so dark that you can't see into it and there is no wildlife around it. Perhaps the malevolent mermaid keeps everything away? I was brave enough to get close, and this is what I saw:

Needless to say, there'll be a great deal more action in my story. :)

Still, a lovely place to visit, particularly if you're interested in myths, legends and history.
