Author Frank McCourt died yesterday in New York of meningitis at the age of 78. Best known for his Pulitizer-winning memoir, Angela's Ashes, McCourt taught high school for 30 years before retiring and writing the book.
I was hesitant about reading Angela's Ashes because of its depressing subject matter, but it got such reviews that I decided to try reading it…and was so glad I did. McCourt manages to tell his story with such humor and compassion that by the end, I felt uplifted rather than draine
