I am not a monster ...

At least not all the time.

OK, I was reading a post someone made the other day where they remarked upon meeting one of their idols in the form of a horror writer. They then went on to say how surprised they were that said writer was 'so normal', just like everybody else, and it got me to thinking (I know, it's dangerous thinking) about how we (or namely me) are perceived as writers. Do people really think that because I write about killing people, monsters and suchlike that I am inherently evil? Am I a product of my own imagination? Just because I have a vivid (perhaps sometimes sick) imagination, it doesn't mean I really go out and do the things I write about. Well, you didn't think I'd admit to my crimes, did you?

So what do other people think? Do you believe that if someone writes about something evil, that it must mean they are an evil person themselves?

John Allen A lot of people can't separate the writer from the work. When my novel, Gifted Trust, was released people stopped speaking to me (relatives, friends and neighbors) and I received death threats toward myself and my family. One neighbor hadn't read it and she would talk to me over the backyard fence (about how others were avoiding me). She used to ask me if I had any spare copies and I'd tell her no, adding that it was quite violent and I'd like to stay on good terms with one neighbor. Finally I gave in and handed her copy. The next time she spoke to me was about 18 months later. During that time I'd be sitting on my patio reading or whatever and I'd watch her pull into her driveway. Sometimes she'd look over the fence and rush into her house. The next time we spoke - a year and a half later - was the night my wife passed away. She gave me the, "If you need anything," line. My thought was to was to tell her to get screwed, but I was preoccupied at the moment.

Shaun, there are a lot of idiots who can't tell the difference between actors and roles they play or writers and their stories. Are they are to me is material :)

Damn you put me in a mood. LOL
