Relieved

Note: This post is about personal stuff. Skip if you only want professional updates.

Around the middle of January, I found out that my dog Gypsy needed double surgery: one to fix a ruptured tendon in her back leg, another to fix an ulcer in her eye. Since Gypsy is twelve, general anesthesia is risky and the recovery time for her leg was over two months with her in a cage. Before anyone says "So? She's just a dog," I love Gypsy and my other dog, Loki, as if I were blood related to them, and since Gypsy has been with me for the past twelve years, I am ridiculously attached to her. Thus, this was/is a big deal to me.

Back to the surgeries. Gypsy's leg and eye surgery went fine, so we moved out of state about two weeks afterward as planned. Two weeks after that, Gypsy's eye started to act up again. We took her to a new vet, who informed us that her eye ulcer was back and she needed another surgery. So, Gypsy had her second eye surgery, which also required at-home care consisting of 4 different medicated eye drops four times a day, spacing each drop at least five minutes apart (that's a total of 16 times a day my hubby and I would have to hold her down, squirt drops in her eyes, then keep her in the Cone of Shame so she didn't scratch her painful eye and make it worse. Gypsy was as upset about this as I was, because you can't explain to a dog that this is for their own good. Instead, she probably thought that we were only torturing her for our own inexplicable, cruel amusement.)

About two weeks later at her recheck appointment, we got more bad news from the vet: Gypsy's eye ulcer still wasn't healed and she needed a third surgery. That would also mean another two weeks of four different eye drops a day, four times a day, and if her ulcer became infected, her condition would go from bad to worse. So, eye surgery number four happened. About ten days later at her next recheck, we received more bad news: the ulcer had healed in the old spots, but new ulcers had cropped up. The vet surmised that Gypsy's age caused a degenerative issue where fluids in her eye weren't being dispersed as they should be. Instead, they built up until they "bubbled," causing the ulcers. The vet proposed a new, more extensive corneal procedure that would produce scar tissue on her cornea, with the hope that the scar tissues would act as a shield against this bubbling up. Then, more at-home care with the eye drops would help her eye to disperse fluids as it should naturally. But, there was a catch: because all previous procedures had failed, if this didn't work, then the only other option would be to remove Gypsy's eye entirely.

We went with the more extensive, fifth eye surgery and the 4 drops, 4x a day at-home follow up care. For the past two weeks, I have been bracing myself for the worst because, to be honest, 2016 has kinda sucked so far (my mother's unexpected passing, a book release being pushed back over a year, pre-orders getting erroneously canceled, moving issues, more business issues, family issues, this, etc.) So, I was expecting to hear that the Gypsy's eye hadn't healed and we'd need to have it removed. Aside from how upsetting this would be for me, it would be worse for Gypsy, who would have to undergo another risk with surgical anesthesia, risks of infection after the surgery, visual limitations from losing an eye, plus be in a cone for another few weeks, which she hates and the poor thing has already been in a cone for three straight months.

In fact, I had so prepared myself for bad news that yesterday, when the vet told me all of Gypsy's ulcers had finally healed, I didn't believe him. I spent the rest of the day expecting him to call and say some version of "Psyche!" Today, the relief is setting in at last, and I hope that this good news heralds a brighter 2016 to come.

In closing, Gypsy's vision is a little limited in one eye now, but she still has both of them, and we have finally been able to put away the Cone of Shame. I will spend the rest of the day enjoying that good news, and when she comes in for her usual pets this afternoon as I'm writing, it'll make me smile even more than normal :).

Anino Hi Jeaniene,
As someone who has 4 dogs that are like my very own children, I can definitely sympathize with your ordeal. I hope that everything works out for Gypsy, and that she fully recovers..

Allison She is a beautiful baby and I'm so glad that everything is finally looking up!

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) Dear Jeaniene,
So sorry your sweet Gypsy had to endure so many surgeries, and am very glad she is doing well. I hope and pray she stays on the road to recovery. She's a beauty.
As a rescuer of only sick, old, and unwanted dogs, it's awful not being able to explain why they will endure pain. We can only be there to comfort them when they come out.
I applaud you for not mentioning money once, because you, like us are not independently wealthy, but will do whatever necessary to take care of our four-legged family members.
Thank you for sharing this story with us.
(Cyber Hugs), Sue

Anja Instead, she probably thought that we were only torturing her for our own inexplicable, cruel amusement.

Did she ~treat you with the infamous shiba scream?

I'm so glad your precious baby is doing well :)

Veronica-Lynn Pit Bull I'm so happy Gypsy is on the mend! They make life worth living and it's only right that we try to give back a fraction of the joy they bring us. Enjoy your baby!

Oh my gosh, yes. Every time we would do her drops, she would let out this sound that a rabid werewolf wouldn't be able to make. I'm surprised our neighbors haven't called the police!

Heather Jeaniene,

I love my fur babies so much - I can truly sympathize with how painful it is when they are hurting/sick. My two fur babies mean so much to me and have helped my husband and I as we have dealt with our own health issues during the past two years. So glad that you got some good news and pray that the good news continues throughout 2016.

{HUGS}
Heather

Kaycee Not surprising I love your books. You love your dogs just like I love mine. That love is present in the characters you write about. I am so glad your Gypsy is on the road to recovery and no longer wears the collar of shame. LOL

CorvusAnima We animal lovers get that having a pet is more than just a pet, but an essential member of the family. So my best wishes to your fluffy friend Gypsy and hope she gets more wonderful years of life. As I someone who has been in the same sport of worry, I can feel your pain. Three years ago I almost lost my furry friend, and the pain of almost losing her was very hard. And coming from a family does not really care for pets--expect for us new generation, my attachment to my dog took me by surprise. I was a nerves wreck when we took her to the hospital, and I am the type of person to take charge and worry about emotions later Yet there I was, begging all the possible deities in the world for her to recovery. Almost losing my furry BFF scared me half way to death. So as I said before, I feel your pain. Hope things get better, both with your Gypsy and in this bad luck part of the year you seemed to be stuck in. Just keep writing...(hehe, get it, from Finding Nemo...okay. I'm just going to go now...)
Many happy wishes and love your books!

message 16: by Amber (new)

Amber Happy you got good news! Hope she heals and feels better soon. I have 2 siamese cats that are part of our family. :)

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) Dear Jeaniene,
CorvusAnima above said it well that "We animal lovers get that having a pet is more than just a pet, but an essential member of the family." And for my Hubby and me who rescue those sick, old and on death row, we have been doing this for over 20 years and have a large shelf with urns and memorial photos. Our purpose is to provide them all medical care, nutrition, and most importantly, love, to preserve their quality of life for as long as they have. We ran out of money years ago and live on credit cards, but we'll never run out of love. They are our family.
Very glad to know your beautiful Gypsy is doing better.
On a side note that I didn't feel right about including in my first post, I greatly enjoy your work. : ) Hugs!

Thank you. I never thought of it that way. I did go to court 3 times over a puppy that was hit by a car and never treated. The city knew about it, but didn't issue a citation or follow up. The puppy grew into a dog with a deformed leg she couldn't use. We found out a year later and took charge of the situation. Tufts performed surgery, placing a steel plate in her paw. We adopted her out to a Tufts employee who did therapy on the side. Now she's happy and walking fine. Going to court for over a year made me sick, but all the judges told the selfish, stupid owner that the medical reports proved the dog was seriously neglected. We've been lucky to help others in more sickening and horrific situations. God gave us a purpose in life, and this is it. : )

Michele I am sooo happy to hear your fur baby is finally on the mend. What a precious baby. I too have two dogs and they are my heart. So I totally understand how heart wrenching going through this whole process was but am glad that the light at the end of the tunnel is finally foreseeable. Best of luck!!

Jan Well I sure know how Gypsy feels. I am person who suffers from chronic illness living with more doctors and surgeries each month. I just wanted to let you know you deserve some good karma as listening to Bones and Cat keeps me going. I was just listening, well re-listening to them and it helps me with recovery.

Cynthia Phillips Our entire family is crazy in love with our pets. Love is love...not matter the race, gender or species. Gypsy is so very lucky to have you. I'm so happy Gypsy is finally doing so well. For what it's worth, 2016 has pretty much stunk for me as well (lost my dad, broke my wrist riding my son's Hoverboard...really. Broke it so badly that I needed surgery [implant with 8 screws] among other heartfelt things I won't share publically). I keep hearing in my mind and heart..."this to shall pass" and "have faith things will get better". I share my hopes and faith with you : )
