"I see this scene as outside of the universe of the rest of the show. Instead, this scene is actually..."
“I see this scene as outside of the universe of the rest of the show. Instead, this scene is actually Holmes and Watson, together in Baker Street as they always were, and always will be. In that world, the elephant is in the room: they are not free to share their feelings publicly. That Sherlock shares his imagined future with John, and says he would be very much at home in that world. Watson doubts he would be comfortable there, but Holmes knows he would be; he knows it better; and because he knows what that world would mean for them. Because even though Holmes is a product of the Victorian era, he is a man out of his time, and what reason is there for that other than the obvious, unspoken truth, that Sherlock Holmes and John Watson are in love, and always have been? Holmes dreams of a world where they can be together without fear- the world of our show.”

Rebekah ( @softsons) on the ending of The Abominable Bride in TJLC Explained: [Episode 11] The Elephant in the Room (x)
Thank you for another perfect summary of the truth! This is why the writers could have only given The Abominable Bride this exact ending. For whether we are in 1895, or before or beyond, this always has, and always will be, a love story. (x)
