Stake And Hoe All Vampires

Oh,howTelevisioncan ruin a good thing. One of my favorite TV shows starringJosh Gates, supposedly an archeologist of some sort, stars in Expedition Unknownon theTravel Channeldecided to run an episode about findingVampires. It was damn interesting too. They even got the chance to interview the leader of a group of men, from aBulgarian Village, who swore that the recent death ofFellow Villager, was making people sick because he was aVampire. They dug up the grave in the middle of the night, why was the Vampire at home then, they cut out his heart,he was only dead for two weeks, cooked it in some kind of brothand held a medieval ritual, feeding it to the sickVillagerswhich cured them immediately.Talking about power of the mind inflicting sickness to oneself, then curing oneself with superstition. It was pretty fascinating. The show is still good to watch. The only part that upset me was whenJosh Gatesexplains,at the end of the show, the above Skeleton, with the piece of metal from a hoe sticking in his neck, had possibly a rare disease calledPorphyriaafter itsDNAwas tested.First, the test wasn't conclusive, and second,Josh Gatessaid that theSkeleton,if he hadPorphyria, would have an aversion to sunlight, that his gums would shrink making his teeth look like fangs, and have a repugnance towards garlic.I was so excited about finding something new that I could write a story on and I looked into the subject.Further study shows that20,000 Americansare afflicted with the disease each year. There are two main types of the disease.Acute Porphyriaswhich is the worst one to be inflicted with, andCutaneous Porphyriaswhich is the one that the victims have the aversion to sunlight. Cutaneous Porphyriascan, but not always, occur due to some other diseases, that hasn't been treated, like a gum disease. And the repugnance to Garlic?Ask anyone with a gum disease what theAllium Family of Foodsdo to their mouths. The show stood on its own merits until they sensationalized it by stretching the truth.
