After Each Draft, A Writer’s Voice Speaks Meanly

I edit all of my books 12 times total.

I edit each book AT LEAST eight times before I even dare to send it to my editor and agent.

By the time I’m done I’m mostly out of my own mind, muttering to myself, wandering around aimlessly, the house a wreck.

I thought you might be interested in the things I say to myself after my first draft and succeeding edits.

It’s not pretty.

Sandra You write such wonderful books. I hope you will be kinder to yourself when you are editing. You have to be a wonderful person to write the way you do. However, I am not a writer and there is no way I can understand what it is like for you to get a story ready to be published. How long does the process take from the time you start writing until the book is ready to be sold.

Lillian You are so funny! I have to write those notes to myself just to focus on my life. You are creating works of words!

Cathy Lamb Sandra, thank you! So glad you like my books.
It takes about 9 - ish months for me to write my books. Give or take.
I journal, usually four or five journals or more for each book, I sketch out characters, I send my ideas to my agent and editor, I think of a first line, then I write 2000 words a day, 10,000 words a week for the first draft or I don't let myself go to bed on Sat. night. Each book gets about 12 edits. It wipes me out!

Cathy Lamb Lillian,
Thank you. I try to add a lot of humor to my books because I think we women need to laugh. That's why I added Lingerie Bike Riding at Midnight to my novel, My Very Best Friend. I dare everyone to try it, yes I do. It's also why I added a naked run along a river for my character, Jeanne Stewart, in The Last Time I Was Me. And why I added Breast Power Psychic Night to Julia's Chocolates. We need laughter, life is too hard without it.

Cheers.
