Bau-Xi Gallery. Construct is a series of interventions on physical photographic prints by Chris Shepherd
Bau-Xi Gallery. Construct is a series of interventions on physical photographic prints. Through shredding, cutting, tearing, folding, crumpling and other processes photographic prints are rearranged and reconfigured into sculptural forms. These new objects are then re-photographed and the journey–from taking to making and back to taking–allows the viewer to re-evaluate the conventional language of photography. Memory, nostalgia, documentation and other established tropes of the medium become secondary to the form and object, opening a dialogue about what photograph is and means.

Chris Shepherd, Sky Crumpled, chromogenic print mounted to archival substrate, Edition of 7, 36 x 36 inches, $2600

** Bau-Xi Gallery opened in 1965 in Vancouver, BC to create a showcase for the many emerging and established Canadian artists in need of a gallery on the West Coast. BAU-XI (boe she) translates to “great gift”. Bau-Xi Gallery remains the oldest contemporary gallery in Vancouver.
The Gallery has been a member of the Art Dealers Association of Canada since the early 1970s, and in Vancouver, a founding member of the South Granville Gallery Association. Over the years, the iconic Vancouver gallery has expanded to include Foster/White Gallery in Seattle, Bau-Xi Gallery in Toronto, and Bau-Xi Photo, which is one of the few strictly photography galleries in Toronto.
Since its inception, Bau-Xi Gallery has been recognized as one of Canada’s most highly regarded art galleries, with a reputation founded on adherence to the highest standards in quality of art and service to clients.
