…and of COURSE I get accused of racism for having a Latino character who is a gang member. Because that never happens in the real worlld. Ever.
Honest talk: people of color, just like everyone else, sometimes lead questionable lives. Depicting these characters in a fic is not racism, it’s storytelling.
AND the character, as Sherlock noted in the fic, is a college educated suburban student playing hard into a stereotype for his own amusement.
This story is FULL of poc, just as the area is IRL. Some of the people they encounter are going to be Bad Guys. It’s the nature of Sherlock’s line of work, after all.
*shrug* These are my streets. This is where I am from. There is no one in these fics (including JayJay Martniez) who is not drawn from someone I have encountered in real life.
Is the guideline now that people of color need to be perfect and blameless and never bad guys at all times? Because that’s pretty damn problematic in its own way.
It’s exactly the same, in fact, as the “Mary as a villain is misogyny” line of thought.
I’ve gotten this too. You can’t have a POC, or a woman, do anything remotely questionable, or even have a nasty line of dialogue, without someone crying racist! or misogynist! Because, you know, IRL only white, wealthy males ever do anything wrong.
It’s fucking ridiculous and it hobbles storytelling immensely.
