Garry Shandling is dead. This is awful. I’ll tell you why.


Yes, he’s that politician guy from the Iron Man movies or whatever. But, that’s not his greatest contribution. It’s not hyperbole to say, if it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have shows like Veep and The Daily Show and Entourage and all reality shows and pretty much every other comedy on television. That’s because he literally changed comedy forever with two shows.


It’s Garry Shandling’s Show dissected the standard half-hour sitcom, often breaking the fourth wall and calling out specific tropes and insights, which pretty much no other show before had ever done.


The Larry Sanders Show skewered not only the world of late night talk shows, but celebrities in general, allowing real stars to play fictionalized or at least embellished versions of themselves behind the scenes. And it was all done within an actual late night talk show.
