I always thought of Darcy as a "still waters run deep" type of hero. He is methodical never spontaneous. He relies on social conventions, without them he would be uncomfortable and uncertain how to progress. This is why speaking from his heart is so difficult, and why he messes up so badly the first time he proposes. Elizabeth is the wrench in his orderly world. She takes him out of his comfort zone and forces him to true to himself.
