Word Of The Day: LOVING

Over the next few weeks I will be focusing on a word of the day drawn from a list created at the beginning of January. Each word was chosen to serve as a guide to inspire and inform my steps through 2020. If you are just joining me now and want to look in on earlier posts on this topic, you will find links to each at the end.

LOVING

About to head home after a long day of work, I standing at the security desk gathering up my things while talking with my young daughters on my first ever cell phone, a Motorola that looked kind of like a brick with an antenna. I’d landed on that one because all the others cost twice as much per month, and I was nothing if not on a tight budget. Not only that, it was big enough that if someone tried to snatch my purse I could do some serious damage to the would-be thief. My last words as I ended the phone call were the same ones they always were.

I love you girls.

Looking up from my phone call as the young woman behind the security desk handed me my coat, I noticed tears in her eyes. You know, she said, I’m sure my parents love me, but I’ve never heard them actually say it to me.

That happened 27 years ago, but I will never forget that moment. It honestly didn’t dawn on me that other people didn’t express their love verbally. At least in part.

There are many ways to express love, and words are but one way. Communicating words of love without actions to back them up ring hollow. Loving actions without ever hearing the words can be too faint to hear. Each without the other is like a fragment of a thought. When it comes to love, it is best expressed in complete sentences.

Word Of The Day: EXPANSIVE

Over the next few weeks I will be focusing on a word of the day drawn from a list created at the beginning of January. Each word was chosen to serve as a guide to inspire and inform my steps through 2020. If you are just joining me now and want to look in on earlier posts on this topic, you will find links to each at the end.

EXPANSIVE

It is easy to develop a myopic view of the world, which seems to me to be the exact opposite of an expansive one.

Expansive makes room for difference.

Expansive takes in the ground beneath our feet as well as the possibilities over the far horizon.

Expansive means to have space for the unexpected in the midst of our carefully planned agendas.

Expansive means to continue to grow and stretch and to reach beyond the boundaries of what we know.

Expansive is the practice of seeing the world through the lens of possibility.

Let’s choose an expansive life.

FIERCE

The work of becoming ourselves, of crafting meaningful lives, is hard work. So hard in fact that some people may not want to do it, but that is the invitation life offers to us every day. It’s not for the faint of heart, but there’s nothing else like it.

Word Of The Day: INTUITION

Over the next few weeks I will be focusing on a word of the day drawn from a list created at the beginning of January. Each word was chosen to serve as a guide to inspire and inform my steps through 2020. If you are just joining me now and want to look in on earlier posts on this topic, you will find links to each at the end.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

INTUITION

As we made our way up the hill towards the colorful sculpture at the top, the incline was getting steeper with every step. At one point a small hand belonging to my one-and-a-half year old grand boy reached up to take ahold of just one of my fingers. He didn’t look up. He didn’t ask. He just reached out and grabbed it, holding on until we reached the top, and then he let go and went about exploring the new territory. He didn’t have to consciously think about it, he simply knew when to reach out and take ahold of some trusted help to make his way.

Intuition is a lot like that.

It is there at the ready, and the more we take hold of its hand, the more we trust where it will lead us.

PATIENT

pa·tient ~ able to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious.

When I came up with my list of words on which to hang my 2020 hat that would help me live into the person I aspire to be, why this word didn’t appear on my list is a mystery. Whether navigating traffic, corralling small boys, rubbing up against the rough edges of a relationship, encountering delays in my well planned agenda, running into an unexpected problem, or simply tolerating the chatter in my own head, patience is the oil that can grease the skids.

Like all of the qualities I hope to embody, patience is nothing if not a daily practice. Thankfully, as life would have it, there is no shortage of opportunities to put it to good use.

To be engaged is to participate fully in something.

To be engaged is to be all in.

To be engaged can only happen in the here and now.

To be engaged is to accept the invitation to be exactly where we are.

NOURISHED

As I sit sipping my double latte, savoring a few moments of quiet from the glorious commotion of time with three small grand-boys all under the age of four, I am reminded of the importance of nourishment.

Nourishment is found in the food, literal or otherwise, necessary for our growth, health, and strength, and it is ours to fill our plates with that which will sustain us for the short term and for the long haul. Right now this quiet time to enjoy a beautifully prepared latte, write a few words, and walk a few blocks, is the sustenance necessary for my days of loving and supporting this family of five.

To nourish ourselves well for the life that is ours is a daily practice. One that brings to mind a line from a familiar ancient prayer…

Give us this day our daily bread.

Amen.

May it be so.

CURIOSITY

Curiosity is a desire to learn, to discover, and to be open to new ideas and possibilities. To be curious is to wonder, and to ask yet another question. It is a spirit of inquisitiveness that leads into undiscovered territory and out into the frontier of our not knowing.

It is a wonderful thing to be curious about what piques our interest.

That is the exciting side of the curiosity coin.

There is however, another side to that coin. A side which requires even more courage, more daring, and more vulnerability. And that is the willingness to consider that there may be more to the story than we can see, or a different story altogether. The real test of our curiosity is whether we are willing to loosen our grip on our point of view, look at things through the lens of another, and even be proven wrong.

“In ordinary life, we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

GRATITUDE

Gratitude and generosity go hand-in-hand.

Like many of the ways in which I aspire to live, they are both a choice and a practice. When practiced together, they create a self-sustaining loop of goodness that can’t help but change us, and in the process changes the world around us.

Even in the most challenging of times there is always something for which to be grateful, and, there is always some way in which to be generous. When generosity feels impossible to muster, grab hold of the hand of gratitude. When gratitude feels beyond our reach, the hand of generosity will show us the way.
